I have heard back from the supervisor and am trying to pin down dates. I’ve not heard back since my initial email, but it’s not the weekend. I will be calling on Tuesday if I don’t hear anything on Mon.

I have come across an awesome opportunity. All of this is still in the planning stages. Nothing is set in stone. I want to see if people are interested in what I’m proposing and then go forward with the endeavor. Read on to learn more about the place.

My husband and I stumbled upon this place: http://www.ellicottcity.net/tourism/attractions/patapsco_female_institute/ The images on the website don’t do it justice. A quick search on flicker did a better job http://www.flickr.com/search/?q=Patapsco%20Female%20Institute The Patapsco Female Institute is a private park in which you can rent out blocks of time for a variety of functions.

We talked to the woman who supervises the park. It’s private property so you can only have permission/rent the space to use it. It’s a bit pricey to rent, but this is where the fun comes in. This area is perfect for a variety of cosplays. There’s a “basement” which is dark and spooky, there’s the classical element, a bit of a garden and then overall great stone/plaster facade. It’s well maintained. My husband came up with the idea of renting the area with the purpose of having photoshoots. We’d like to invite cosplayers and photographers to help make this happen.

It would be a one day event for people get some great shots of their cosplays. We would divide the fee of the rent to use the space amongst everyone to keep the cost down. If we were to rent it for 3 hours it’s be about $429. I would want a minimum of 10 people to do this ($42 for 10). If we generate a lot of interest for this event we can extend the hours.

Now for the details of when… which I don’t have due to this being in the planning stages. I don’t have a date, time or what to do if you are out of the area. I will get to all that once I know who is interested. I will have several conditions if this whole thing comes into fruition. If you are interested, you will be responsible for the cost and equipment (camera/cosplay). I understand that life happens, but I will ask for the money a few days prior to the event and it will be non refundable. I want to keep the cost down for all, and if people start backing out then I am out of the money. Which isn’t fair for me because I’m the organizer. I will be paying for my share, and I expect the same of others. My other conditions are far simpler. We must be respectful of the property. I will be setting up a tent for cosplayers to change and other minor supplies, anything we bring on property must be able to leave it as it was. As for accommodations, I will speaking to you privately about that. I can not guarantee that I will be able to provide all who are interested accommodations for free. If we say get 20+ people to come, there is only so much space in my house hold. Elliott city is a historic area and there are motels/hotels in the vicinity.

So! For those interested. I would like a good ratio of cosplayers to photographers. It’s not fair if we have one photographer and nine cosplayers. I would like a minimum of 3 photographers and 7 cosplayers. If there are more people interest then the number goes up, we could even have an equal number of each. I can always ask for more hours for the area, that will increase the price, but I can’t foresee it jumping the cost more than $50 as long as I keep the numbers according to how much time we need.

Some questions I may not be able to answer until I speak with the supervisor of the park, if I get 10+ people interested in the next few days then I will make contact and go from there. I make no guarantees that this will happen, it is something I want to do and planning for. If for some reason we can’t rent the space or there’s not enough interest, then there’s not much else I can do.

→ Raquel Gothic Wings Process

When going into this project I knew weight was going to be my #1 issue. I really hunted for the right process, bought a fair amount of materials, asked around online, went to a panel on wings as asked the kind ladies… and basically I had to wing it. First I need to apologize, this is really more an explanation of my process than a tutorial as this project really kicked my butt. If I could it over I would as there were many things that went right and wrong all at once. Second I need to state that what I’ve done is just worked for me, I’m sure I did some things wrong. If you know how to do it better please explain how to make it better. The one thing I love about this community is the sharing of knowledge. That is one of my goals as a cosplayer, I’m not here to just make it, put the costume on and then never talk of it again… No, I’m here to learn and to share what I’m learning.

The harness will be in a separate write up, as this is way too long. I will be working on it soon and will link back to this.
